We are building autonomous systems through experiential learning and driverless racing to solve the problems of tomorrow.

We are inspired by the role of autonomous systems in addressing strategic operational and logistical real-world challenges. Student team members collaborate with our professor advisors to engagingly approach autonomous systems outside the classroom by building and managing complex projects.

F1Tenth

F1Tenth was founded by a cohort of professors from the University of Pennsylvania to foster interest, excitement, and critical thinking about the field of autonomous racing. To promote participation, teams compete with RC like cars, approximately 1/10th the scale of a formula student car. Carnegie Autonomous Racing participated in this race for the first time in February 2022.

Formula Student Driverless was inspired by the Formula Student Automotive Engineers collegiate engineering competition of students to design and build a formula-style car. Carnegie Autonomous Racing’s biggest team, FSD is a combination of professors, undergraduate, and graduate students, converting an electric formula-style car to compete fully autonomously.

Learn to Race

F1Tenth

Learn to Race was founded in 2020 as a capstone project for CMU Masters and Ph.D. students. The intention was to build an OpenAI gym compliant, multimodal control environment. The project’s success led the team to publish whitepapers, present research across international conferences, build a virtual racing simulator to apply reinforcement learning techniques, and host an annual Virtual Autonomous Racing Challenge with over 300 participating teams.
